One of Palo Alto premiere neighborhoods, Old Palo Alto is not even Palo Alto s oldest neighborhood. It does, however, have a sort of pre-war vibe. Old Palo Alto is bordered by Alma Street, Embarcadaro, Middlefield Road and Oregon Expressway. The neighborhood is characterized by quiet, tree-lined streets with little through traffic. Homes in Old Palo Alto have a low turnover rate. People who move into the area tend to stay long term.
Historically, Old Palo Alto has been a neighborhood that does not include any tract housing. When the area began developing in the early 1900s, construction was dominated by individual built homes. Even with the newer construction in the neighborhood, there has been an effort to maintain the appearance that no two homes are alike. This contributes to the unique atmosphere of Old Palo Alto. In Palo Alto it is rare to find lot sizes in the 1 acre range. The Old Palo Alto neighborhood has some of these lots as well as some homes that exceed 4000 sq ft in size. Old Palo Alto has been popular in recent years with wealthy Silicon Valley residents moving in, building larger homes in the neighborhood.
