Palo Alto School District – What You Need to Know

During the home buying process, the quality of the school district is ranks highly with families looking for a neighborhood to call home. One of the reasons why Palo Alto is a popular city for families is because of its excellent school system and its family friendly neighborhoods. There are libraries, Junior museum and zoo, vibrant downtown, and over 162 acres of developed urban parks throughout the city. All these features make this an ideal place to call home for families. The school district that serves the Palo Alto community is the Palo Alto Unified School District (PAUSD).
About the Palo Alto Unified School District

PAUSD serves approximately 10,000 students who live in most of the City of Palo Alto, areas of Los Altos Hills, and Portola Valley, as well as the Stanford University campus. The district consists of twelve K – 5 elementary schools, three middle schools for grades 6 – 8 and two high schools which serve grades 9 – 12. In addition, the District currently operates a pre-school, the Young Fives program, an Adult School, Stanford’s Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital School, and Summer School.

Palo Alto Unified School District Registration Information
What are the requirements for registration in the the Palo Alto School District?
- be at least five (5) years of age on or before December 2nd of that academic calendar year
- reside on a full-time permanent basis (seven days and seven nights) within the boundaries of the District
- All registrations must be submitted/processed at the Central Attendance Office

Palo Alto School Choice Programs
Palo Alto Unified School District (PAUSD) offers several choice schools and programs for its students. All Palo Alto School District students are eligible to attend. Admission is granted through a lottery system. Parents are responsible for providing their children’s transportation to and from school. These programs include:
Elementary School Choice Programs
Hoover Elementary School: Offers a more structured alternative to elementary education.
Ohlone Elementary School: Offers an open classroom philosophy with open-ended activities, personalized instruction, and peer tutoring. Teachers facilitate academic, social, and emotional learning.
Mandarin Dual Immersion Program: designed to develop full bilingualism in both Mandarin and English. English-speaking students and native Mandarin speakers are taught together using Mandarin and English instruction to develop bilingual academic fluency.
Spanish Dual Immersion Program: The Spanish Dual Immersion Program at Escondido Elementary School is designed to develop full bilingualism in both Spanish and English. English-speaking students and native Spanish speakers are taught together using Spanish and English instruction to develop bilingual academic fluency.
Middle School Choice Programs
JLS Connections: offers a project-based learning environment where students gain and practice the higher order thinking skills needed to create, design, analyze, and problem solve in real-world contexts.
Spanish Immersion at Jordan Middle School: is a continuation of the bilingual curriculum of elementary Spanish Immersion.
